I am sure most of you are aware now; tragedy has struck our campus today. Early this afternoon, January21st, a shooter came into an engineering building on campus and killed one individual. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a member of our Boilermaker family and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of that individual.
In times of tragedy such as these, it is easy to point out all the flaws of any system, but I would like to take a moment to remember how far we have come in creating effective emergency preparedness systems. Within moments of this horrible tragedy the Purdue Alert system sent out a message informing students, faculty, and staff of the shooting and to seek shelter in a safe location until the all clear was given. The establishment of alert systems, like the one at Purdue, is just one of the many ways we can use technology to keep people safe, and reduce the risk of loss of life in times of tragedy.
